Global critique of Israel is getting sharper. But what does it matter if US keeps backing Netanyahu?

Canada, Australia and Portugal joined UK in recognising Palestinian statehood over the weekend. This came ahead of the UN summit co-hosted by France and Saudi Arabia yesterday that focused on Israel’s war in Gaza and the elusive Two State Solution to the Israel-Palestine mother conflict. All of this makes clear a growing international momentum against Israel. The Gaza conflict is homing in on two years with Tel Aviv showing no signs of relenting. Meanwhile, Israel is expanding its settlements in West Bank. This will ensure there is no contiguous Palestine state. Thus, there’s increasing realisation that Israel is using the Gaza conflict to erase the possibility of a Palestine state itself.
That means defeating Hamas, the ostensible goal of Israeli military operations in Gaza, is only a pretext. Had it not been so, Tel Aviv would have had no problem in signing up to a plan that would hand over post-war Gaza to Palestinian Authority (PA). But Tel Aviv has been deliberately gutting PA and withholding the latter’s taxes, crippling its essential functions. This has even prompted Germany-an Israel ally-to consider sending financial aid to PA.
Of course, Israel gets away with all this because of solid US backing. American Jewish and Evangelical lobbies have huge influence in US politics. Therefore, Trump can politically ill-afford to dump Israel, even though he was reportedly unhappy with Netanyahu for striking Hamas leaders in Qatar. Which means UN can pass all the resolutions it wants in favour of Palestine statehood, but it won’t make much of a difference to Israel or the Gaza conflict. There might be a split in the Western camp over Israel, but this isn’t enough to rein in Tel Aviv. Even growing economic boycott of Israel may not move the needle. Israel’s actions are truly showing the limits of multilateralism. The international community can only profess helplessness.
Palestine-Israel: Four More Get It Right

It is the sign of pragmatic wisdom to change one’s opinions when new facts come to light. This holds as true for countries as it does for individuals. So, when on Sunday, Britain, Canada, Australia and Portugal broke ranks with their traditional Big Brother ally, the US, and formally recognised the State of Palestine, it was a healthy reckoning. After nearly two years of relentless bombardment, starvation and displacement in Gaza by the Benjamin Netanyahu government, the moral bankruptcy of silence became too heavy to bear. Recognition was not a gift to Hamas or terrorism, as Netanyahu chose to describe it, but a CPR to the idea that Palestinians deserve dignity, sovereignty and a future.
This move is not merely symbolic. It shifts the diplomatic centre of gravity somewhat, since Trump had noted in his recent London visit that Keir Starmer’s decision-an important one, considering that Britain was one of the prime architects of the creation of Israel in 1948 in the British-administered League of Nations mandate was a point of difference in the Anglo-American friendship. When G7 nations – who helped shape the post- WW2 order acknowledge Palestine, they challenge the monopoly of vetoes and ultimatums that have long stalled peace.
Politically, this recognition isolates extremism. It empowers Palestinian Authority, while marginalising Hamas. It joins a comity of nations that has already called out Israel on its barbarism in the name of existential self-protection. Morally, it was overdue. More than 65,000 Palestinians have died since October 2023. To recognise their right to statehood is not to erase Israeli suffering, but to affirm that suffering should not be the currency of statecraft. Well done, London, Canberra, Ottawa and Lisbon.
वीसा फीस बढ़ाने की जगह शिक्षा का स्तर बढ़ाएं

एच-1 बी वीसा फीस बढ़ाने का ट्रम्प का ऐलान भारत के सामर्थ्य को ललकारना है। पीएम ने इसका समाधान ‘चिप से शिप तक आत्मनिर्भरता बताया।’ एक समय ट्रंप के सहयोगी रहे उद्योगपति मस्क और रामास्वामी ने कहा कि वीसा फीस की जगह शिक्षा का स्तर बढ़ाएं। ट्रम्प वस्तु उत्पादन मूलभूत सिद्धांत- श्रम, पूंजी और तकनीकी में श्रम की कीमत भूल रहे हैं। अगर ये कंपनियां महंगे अमेरिकी इंजीनियर्स रखेंगी तो उत्पादन लागत बढ़ेगी और विश्व बाजार में अन्य देश खड़े होंगे। अमेरिकी कंपनियां आखिर क्यों ताइवान, चीन (या अब भारत में ) सेमी- कंडक्टर बना रही हैं ? अमेरिका डिजाइनिंग का बादशाह इसलिए है कि उसकी संस्थाओं में बाहर के शोधकर्ताओं ने नवाचार को बढ़ाया। नई ट्रम्प नीति के शिकार ये युवा स्वदेश लौट कर ग्लोबल कैपबिलिटी सेंटर्स (जीसीसीज) या भारत-स्थित विदेशी कंपनियों में अपेक्षाकृत कम पगार पर भी योगदान देंगें, जिससे भारत की क्षमता बढ़ेगी। दुनिया में ट्रेड का मूल सिद्धांत है – हर क्षेत्र की उत्पादन लागत में अंतर । इसका कारण होता है स्थानीय वैविध्य, राजकीय मदद का स्तर और कौशल में विभेद । भारत दलहन और तिलहन में आत्मनिर्भर नहीं हो पाया तो इसका कारण समझना होगा। चीन ने रेयर – अर्थ का ऐसा इस्तेमाल किया कि पूरी दुनिया उसकी मोहताज है। भारत को भी प्राकृतिक और मानव संसाधनों तथा कोर एक्सपर्टीज के अनुरूप आत्मनिर्भर बनाना सही नीति होगी।

अमेरिका के राष्ट्रपति डोनाल्ड ट्रंप पिछले कुछ समय से जिस तरह के फैसले ले रहे हैं, उसमें एक विचित्र अस्थिरता दिख रही है। इससे यह भी पता चलता है कि वे शायद हड़बड़ी में ऐसे नीतिगत फैसले भी ले रहे हैं, जिनमें थोड़े ही वक्त बाद उन्हें बदलाव करना पड़ता है। बीते हफ्ते शुक्रवार को उन्होंने एच1बी वीजा के लिए लागत में पचास गुना बढ़ोतरी करके उसे एक लाख डालर यानी करीब अठासी लाख रुपए करने की घोषणा कर दी। इस शुल्क का भुगतान एकमुश्त करना होगा। जाहिर है, इसके बाद व्यापक पैमाने पर चिंता जताई जाने लगी कि अगर यह घोषणा अमल में आई तो खासतौर पर वहां भारतीयों के सामने कैसी स्थितियां पैदा होंगी, वे कैसे और कितने दिन टिक सकेंगे। मगर जैसे ही इसके असर की व्यापकता बहस का मुद्दा बनी, उसमें यह पक्ष भी सामने आया कि अगर यह अमल में आता है तो इससे खुद अमेरिकी हितों पर विपरीत प्रभाव पड़ सकता है। इसके बाद मची उथल-पुथल के बीच इस मसले पर उठे विवाद को शांत करने की कोशिश की गई और पहले के फैसले को बदलते हुए कहा गया कि यह शुल्क सिर्फ नए आवेदकों पर लागू होगा और एक बार ही देना पड़ेगा ।
निश्चित रूप से वहां एच1बी वीजा पर रह रहे भारतीयों के लिए फिलहाल यह राहत की बात होगी कि ताजा फैसले की जद में वे नहीं आएंगे। मगर पिछले कुछ समय में ऐसे कई उदाहरण सामने आए, जिनमें ट्रंप ने बार-बार अपने फैसले में बदलाव किया । यह स्थिति तब है, जब भारत और अमेरिका के बीच व्यापार वार्ता किसी अंतिम निष्कर्ष पर नहीं पहुंची है और आए दिन ऐसे संकेत सामने आ रहे हैं, जिससे पता चलता है कि परिस्थितियों में बदलाव भी आ सकता है। इस क्रम में भारत पर दबाव बनाने के मकसद से अमेरिका ने आयातित वस्तुओं पर शुल्क लगा दिया और यहां तक कि रूस से तेल खरीदने के मामले में भी गैरजरूरी दखल देने की कोशिश की। सवाल है कि इसका असर आखिर क्या पड़ रहा है । अब तेजी से बदलती भू राजनीतिक कूटनीति के दौर में वैश्विक समीकरण भी बदल रहे हैं। ऐसे में अमेरिका को शायद यह समझने की जरूरत है कि द्विपक्षीय संबंधों में बराबरी के स्तर पर एक दूसरे के हितों का ध्यान रखना जरूरी होता है।
